James Glimm

James Gilbert Glimm, born on March 24, 1934, is an American mathematician. He is known for his important work in both pure and applied mathematics.
Glimm has served as president of the American Mathematical Society. He is also a distinguished professor at Stony Brook University.

Life and career
James Glimm was born in Peoria, Illinois, United States on March 24, 1934. He studied engineering at Columbia University and later earned a Ph.D. in mathematics there in 1959. He worked at New York University and Rockefeller University before joining Stony Brook University in 1989.
Glimm made important contributions to many areas of mathematics and science. These included C*-algebras, partial differential equations, and fluid dynamics. He helped start a new area of research called constructive quantum field theory with Arthur Jaffe. In 1993, he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for his work on solving complex math problems. He also served as president of the American Mathematical Society from 2007 to 2009 and was awarded the National Medal of Science in 2002.
