Portrait of Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus, a French architect from the 1800s.

Jean-Baptiste Lassus

Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus (19 March 1807 – 15 July 1857) was a French architect. He is best known for restoring and recreating medieval buildings. Lassus was born in Paris and loved the Gothic style of architecture. He believed this style represented a true French and Christian heritage.

Lassus worked with other architects and historians to bring old medieval buildings back to life. His work helped save many important historical sites that might have been lost. He strongly supported Gothic architecture, thinking it was more meaningful than the classical styles popular at the time.

Throughout his career, Lassus was part of several big restoration projects. His dedication to preserving the past had a lasting impact on how people see and appreciate medieval architecture in France.

Life

Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus was born in Paris on 19 March 1807. He studied at the Collège Stanislas de Paris and later attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Lassus became known for restoring old buildings, especially those with Gothic style.

Lassus worked on many important projects, including the restoration of Sainte-Chapelle and Notre-Dame de Paris. He also designed churches and tombs, such as the tomb of the Abbé Charles-Michel de l'Épée in Saint-Roch, Paris. His work helped save historic buildings, making him an important person in his field.

Style

Jean-Baptiste Lassus mostly designed religious buildings in the Gothic style. Some of his important works are Saint-Nicolas de Nantes (1840), Sacré-Coeur de Moulins (1849), Saint-Pierre de Dijon (1850), Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville (1853), and the Église de Cusset (1855).

Lassus disagreed with the Académie française, which preferred only Greek and Roman architecture. He felt that Gothic architecture, a style from France, was better for the country. He used old building materials and followed the original designs when restoring Gothic buildings. He believed the earliest Gothic buildings were the best examples for new architecture in the 19th century.
