A lava cave is a special kind of cave made in volcanic rock. These caves are created by volcanic activity. Other caves, like sea caves, can also be in volcanic rock, but they form in different ways and usually much later. Lava caves are interesting because they show how volcanoes change the Earth and let us see the strong forces inside our planet. Exploring these caves helps scientists learn more about Earth's history and the wonderful work of nature.

Types

Lava tubes

Small surface tubes

Lava tubes are the most common type of lava cave. They form when lava flows smoothly. The outer parts of the lava harden, but the inside keeps moving, making tunnels. These tunnels keep the lava hot and help it flow farther. The shape of the land and how thick the lava is decide what kind of lava tubes form.

Surface tube

Surface tubes are small channels made by fast-moving lava on hardened surfaces. They are usually too small to enter and help lava tubes grow longer. These tubes are often buried but can sometimes connect to bigger lava tubes below.

Inflationary caves

Inflationary caves are small spaces that form when pressurized lava pushes rock aside. After the lava leaves, these spaces stay. They can look like lava tubes. An example is found in pressure ridges, which are hardened lava formations that may have empty spaces inside.

Liftup caves form near pressure ridges or flat areas of hardened lava. As the edges push out, they can leave small spaces underneath. These caves are usually short but can sometimes be longer.

Open vertical conduits

Open vertical conduits are deep, round or oval passages that lava used to flow through to reach the surface. They can be very deep and wide, with small rock points hanging from the walls. Some of the deepest examples are in Iceland.

Pit craters

Pit craters form when magma almost reaches the surface but then drains away, leaving a big hole. These craters can have steep walls and sometimes connect to hidden spaces below. In Hawaii, some pit craters lead to deep vertical passages.

Rift caves

Rift caves form along cracks in volcanic rock, often where lava flows or erupts. These caves can be very deep and sometimes have old lava inside them. A well-known example is Crystal Ice Cave in Idaho, part of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.

Lava mold caves

Lava mold caves form when lava flows around objects like trees. After the objects burn away or decay, they leave hollow spaces shaped like what they once were. These caves can be found in places like Washington state and Japan.
