SafekipediaThe Lochkovian was one of three important stages in the Early Devonian Epoch. It marks the very start of the Devonian Period. This stage lasted from about 419.62 million years ago to 413.02 million years ago. It was a key time when many new kinds of life began to appear and evolve in the oceans.
The Lochkovian gets its name from the village of Lochkov in the Czech Republic. This village is now part of the city of Prague. Scientists defined this stage using rock layers found in the Lochkow Formation at a place called the Klonk Section in Prague.
In North America, this same time period is called either Gedinnian or Helderbergian. This shows how different places can give their own names to the same part of Earth's history. The Lochkovian helps scientists learn about how life on our planet developed many millions of years ago.
