[Machilis](/wiki/Machilis) nipponica is a small, ancient insect. It belongs to a special group called jumping bristletails. It is part of the family [Machilidae](/wiki/Machilidae) and the order [Archaeognatha](/wiki/Archaeognatha).

These insects are very interesting. They have stayed almost the same for millions of years. This makes them like living fossils. They help scientists learn about life from long ago.

The species Machilis nipponica is mainly found in parts of Asia. It lives especially in Japan. It likes places with moist soil and leaf litter. These tiny creatures have long, bristle-like structures on their backs. They use these to sense their environment.

Although they look similar to lice, they are not related. They live on land and prefer quiet, hidden spots in nature. Studying Machilis nipponica helps us understand how some animals have survived through big changes in Earth's history.
