Formula

A formula is a special way to share important ideas in science using symbols. In math, a formula helps us calculate things like the size of shapes. For example, the volume of a sphere can be found using the formula V = โ 4/3โ  ฯ€ r3, where r is the radius.

One of the most influential figures of computing science's founding generation, Edsger Dijkstra at the blackboard during a conference at ETH Zurich in 1994. In Dijkstra's own words, "A picture may be worth a thousand words, a formula is worth a thousand pictures."

In chemistry, formulas show us what a substance is made of. The compound isobutane has the chemical formula (CH3)3CH, which tells us exactly which atoms are joined together to make it.

Formulas are used in many areas of science to describe relationships between different amounts or parts. Whether we are talking about numbers, shapes, or tiny building blocks of matter, formulas give us a quick and clear way to understand and work with these ideas. In science, the word formula can refer to any general rule that shows how quantities are connected.

In mathematics

In mathematics, a formula is a special way to show a relationship between numbers or things. It helps us solve problems and see patterns.

For example, there is a formula to find the volume of a sphere. If you know the size of the sphere, called the radius, you can use the formula to learn how much space it takes up.

Formulas are also used in science. They help us do hard calculations and solve real-life problems.

In computing

In computing, a formula helps us do calculations, such as adding numbers together, by using different values called variables. For example, we can use a formula to change temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

In spreadsheet programs, formulas tell the computer how to find the value in a specific cell. For instance, if we want to add the numbers in cells A1 and A2 and put the result in cell A3, we might write =A1+A2. This tells the computer to add the values in A1 and A2 and show the answer in A3.

Units

In science, formulas help us understand how different things are related, like temperature, mass, or money. To use these formulas correctly, we need to pick units, such as meters for distance or grams for weight.

One famous example is Boltzmann's entropy formula, which shows how disorder relates to the number of ways particles can be arranged. This formula uses special symbols and numbers to describe this relationship.
