Metropolitan statistical area

In the United States, a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is a geographical region that has many people living close together. It usually has one main city, but also includes surrounding areas that are closely connected to it economically.

MSAs are not actual cities or towns, and they are not official government areas like counties or states. Because of this, the exact borders of a metropolitan area can vary depending on who is describing it.

Many metropolitan areas have more than one important city. For example, the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, Virginia Beach–Norfolk–Newport News (Hampton Roads), Riverside–San Bernardino (Inland Empire), and Minneapolis–Saint Paul (Twin Cities) each have several significant cities.

MSAs are defined by the Office of Management and Budget, which is part of the Executive Office of the President. These areas are used by the U.S. Census Bureau and other U.S. federal government agencies to collect and share data about where people live and work.

Definitions

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget defines special areas called core-based statistical areas (CBSAs) across the country. These areas are made up of counties and county equivalents.

CBSAs are based on a central area with many people living close together, called an urban area. The counties with this central urban area are known as "central counties." These counties must have at least half of their people living in urban areas with populations of 10,000 or more. Other nearby counties, called "outlying counties," can join the CBSA if they have strong economic and social links to the central counties.

When nearby CBSAs are very connected, they are combined into one larger area called a combined statistical area (CSA). CBSAs are split into two types: metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) and micropolitan statistical areas (μSAs). MSAs are built around urban areas with at least 50,000 people, while μSAs are around urban areas with at least 10,000 but fewer than 50,000 people.

History

The Census Bureau made the metropolitan district for the 1910 census to group big cities and nearby places. The rules for these areas changed over time. The name also changed from "metropolitan districts" to "standard metropolitan areas" (SMAs). By 1983, the modern metropolitan statistical area was created, with more updates in the 2000s.

United States

The United States has 387 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). These are places with many people and strong economic ties. They are not cities or towns, but they help us understand where people live and work. Some of the biggest MSAs are New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The United States Census Bureau regularly checks the populations of these areas to see how they are growing and changing.
