Nobel Prize in Physics

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star that exploded long ago, creating beautiful glowing clouds of gas and light in space.

The Nobel Prize in Physics is an award given each year by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It goes to people who have done the best work in the field of physics. It is one of the five Nobel Prizes created by Alfred Nobel in 1895. The prizes have been given out since 1901. The others are the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Nobel Prize in Literature, Nobel Peace Prize, and Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The prize comes with a medal, a diploma, and money. The medal shows a picture of Alfred Nobel.

The first Nobel Prize in Physics was given to a German scientist named Wilhelm Röntgen. He was honored for finding X-rays. The Nobel Foundation manages this prize. It is the highest honor for a scientist working in physics. The prize is given out every year on December 10 in Stockholm.

Background

Alfred Nobel (1833–1896), who established the Nobel Prizes.

Alfred Nobel wanted to use his money to give prizes to people who help others in important ways. He wanted prizes for things like physics, chemistry, peace, physiology, and literature. He wrote this plan one year before he died in 1895. After some talking, his plan was approved in 1897.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gives out the Nobel Prize in Physics. Other groups were set up to give out the other prizes. The rules for these prizes were made official in 1900 by King Oscar II.

Nomination and selection

The Nobel Prize in Physics is given to up to three people for their important work in physics. The process to choose the winners is long and careful. A special group called the Nobel Committee for Physics, with five members chosen by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, handles the selections.

In September, around 3,000 professors and past Nobel winners receive secret nomination forms that must be returned by January. The committee reviews these nominations and narrows them down to about fifteen names. They then recommend final candidates to the Academy, which votes to choose the winners. The names of the nominees are kept secret for fifty years. The prize sometimes goes to someone who passed away a few months after being chosen but before the award ceremony in December.

Prizes

A Nobel Prize in Physics winner gets a gold medal, a special diploma, and money. The medal shows the Goddess of Nature and words about discoveries. Each diploma has the winner's name and a description of their work. The amount of money changes each year, and it can be shared by one, two, or three winners.

Controversies

The Nobel Prize in Physics, like other big awards, has sometimes had discussions about its choices. Some people wonder why some scientists got the prize and others did not. These talks come from different ideas about who helped physics the most and how the prize should be shared. Even with these talks, the Nobel Prize keeps honoring scientists who made big steps in learning about nature.
