The politics of Asia are very different across the continent. This is because Asia is large and has many people with different ways of life. Some countries are constitutional monarchies, absolute monarchies, one-party states, federal states, dependent territories, liberal democracies or military dictatorships. There are also groups working for independence.
Civilization has a long history in Asia, and politics have always been part of it. Some of the earliest political systems began in Mesopotamia. A strong and organized civil service helped these systems work. Today, the political situation in Asia is shaped by past colonialism and imperialism. Some countries still have ties with their former rulers, while others had hard fights to gain independence.
Today, Asia has a mix of situations. There are tensions in places like the South China Sea, Kashmir, Taiwan, Tibet, North Korea and South Korea. Countries like China and India compete economically. However, there are also efforts to work together. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one example of this co-operation.
History
Asia has a long and rich history of politics. Many different ways of governing people have developed there over thousands of years. Early political systems started in places like Mesopotamia, where writing first appeared and told us about ancient governments.
The region has had many types of rule, including constitutional monarchies, absolute monarchies, one-party states, and military dictatorships. This shows the many ways Asian countries have managed their affairs.
International alliances
Asia has many groups that help countries work together. Some of these groups are the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, which helps with trade, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which brings together countries in Southeast Asia.
Other important alliances include the Eurasian Economic Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. These groups help countries talk about problems, share ideas, and support each other.
Asia Council
The Asia Council is a group started in 2016 to help countries in Asia work together. Its big meeting, called a summit, was set for Tokyo in 2018. The Asia Council has meetings and talks where leaders from all over Asia come to discuss important topics for the continent.
These meetings help leaders share ideas and plan for the future of pan-Asian teamwork.
