A research university or a research-intensive university is a university that focuses on research as a key part of its work. These universities help create new knowledge, teach students to think deeply, and prepare future experts in many fields. They often award doctoral degrees, which let students become experts and teachers in their subjects.
Research universities can be public or private schools. Many of their courses for students focus on learning important academic skills, and graduates from these universities are often highly valued by employers. This is because they learn strong life skills, such as critical thinking.
Unlike some other types of colleges, like liberal arts colleges, research universities put a lot of emphasis on faculty members doing research and sharing what they find. This helps the university stay at the forefront of discoveries and advancements in many areas of study.
History
The idea of a research university started in the early 1800s in Prussia. Wilhelm von Humboldt wanted schools to teach and discover new knowledge in science, social studies, and the humanities.
In the United States, research universities grew in the late 1800s. Schools like Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Stanford added advanced studies to their teaching. These universities have helped make many important discoveries and changes around the world.
