Ring-shaped seismicity structures
Ring-shaped seismicity structures are special patterns in earthquake activity. These patterns occur when the points where earthquakes start, called epicenters, line up to form a shape that looks like a ring or an oval. Seismologists often notice these rings before a big earthquake happens. By studying these patterns, they can learn about where and how strong future earthquakes might be.
Most of the earthquakes in these rings are not very strong. They happen evenly on all sides of the oval shape. This helps scientists understand what might happen next and prepare better for larger earthquakes. These structures give important information that can help keep people safe.
Notable examples
Scientists found a special pattern in earthquakes in southern Kamchatka. They noticed that the spots where earthquakes happened made a ring shape. These patterns can be signs that a big earthquake might happen later.
From 1973 to 2024, they studied many earthquakes. They found three ring shapes at different depths under the ground. Big earthquakes often happen about 10 to 15 years after these ring patterns appear. In Kamchatka, a big earthquake happened in 2016 after such patterns were seen. Scientists think there might be a very big earthquake between 2026 and 2031.
