Sticky toffee pudding was invented in 1907 by the landlady of the Gait Inn in Millington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Later, in the 1970s, it became well-known when Francis Coulson and Robert Lee served it at the Sharrow Bay Country House Hotel in Cumbria.
In 1989, the owners of the Village Shop in Cartmel, Cumbria made a version that could be cooked at home in an oven or microwave. This version became very popular and is now sold in supermarkets across the UK. This made it easy for people to bake at home.
