Tórshavn (Faroese: [ˈtʰɔu̯ʂhau̯n]; lit. 'Thor's harbour'; Danish: Thorshavn), locally referred to as Havn, is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. It sits on the east coast of Streymoy, with the mountain Húsareyn nearby.

The history of Tórshavn dates back to AD 850 when the Norse or Scandinavians established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula. Since then, it has been the capital of the Faroe Islands. For many years, Tórshavn was the only place where people could buy and sell goods. This changed in 1856 when free trade began.

History

Skansin fort has been rebuilt several times since it was first built in 1580. The current building dates back to 1790

The Viking settlers arrived in the 9th century and set up their parliaments, called tings, in neutral places. Legend says the main ting for the islands was held in Tórshavn in 825, on the peninsula called Tinganes. They met there every summer on flat rocks, but no permanent settlement existed at the time. The Viking age ended in 1035.

Tórshavn grew slowly over the centuries. In 1271, the Norwegian Crown set up a trade monopoly there. By the 1500s, small forts were built, and the town began to take shape. In 1866, Tórshavn became the official capital of the Faroe Islands, and it kept growing as more nearby villages joined the town.

Climate

Tórshavn has a subpolar oceanic climate. This means its weather is gently influenced by the Atlantic Ocean’s Norwegian Current. This helps keep winter temperatures mild, usually around 6 °C (43 °F), even though it is far north. Summers are cool, with temperatures rarely exceeding 13 °C (55 °F).

The city gets the most rain in autumn and winter, especially in January, because of the Icelandic Low. Spring and summer months are drier but still experience a good amount of rainfall.
