History
After the founding of the Kingdom of Bavaria, the state was reorganized and in 1808 divided into 15 areas, called Kreise. These areas were made to be about the same size and have a similar number of people, much like the French departements.
Over time, the number of Kreise changed because of things like losing Tyrol and gaining the Palatinate. By 1837, there were only 8 left. King Ludwig I of Bavaria gave these areas new names based on old history and tribes. The Mainkreis was renamed to Upper Franconia.
