Geography and Climate

Zhoukoudian Town is in the western part of Fangshan District, about 50 kilometers from central Beijing. The town covers 121.2 square kilometers and has limestone hills and caves. These caves have helped scientists study very old fossils.

The landscape changes from rolling hills in the north to steeper mountains in the south. The heights range from 80 to 400 meters above sea level.

The area has four clear seasons. Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures around 26-28°C (79-82°F) in July and August. Winters are cold and dry, with January temperatures averaging -4 to -6°C (21-25°F). The town gets about 600-650 millimeters of rain each year, mostly in the summer between June and August. The limestone has formed many caves and sinkholes, which have protected important ancient remains.
