The number 2 (two) is both a numeral and a digit. It is the natural number that comes after one and before three. Importantly, it is the smallest even prime number, making it unique in mathematics.
Because two represents a pair or a pair of things, it often appears in ideas about balance and opposition. Many cultures see the number two as holding special meaning in religious and spiritual beliefs, reflecting concepts like harmony, duality, or opposite forces.
In everyday life, the number two is very useful. We use it to count pairs of objects, to describe time in seconds or minutes, and to organize many parts of our world into groups of two. Its simple yet important role makes it a fundamental part of how we understand numbers and patterns.
Mathematics
The number 2 is the second natural number, coming after (/wiki/1). It is special because it is the smallest and the only even prime number. Numbers are built by adding 1 to the number before them.
We call a number even if it can be divided by two. In the number system we use most, even numbers always end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. The binary system, which uses only the digits 0 and 1, is based on the number two and is important in computers.

As a word
The word two is commonly used with plural countable nouns, like in the phrases two days or I'll take these two. It can also be used as a noun, for example, when we say two plus two is four.
The word two comes from Old English words: twā (feminine), tū (neuter), and twēġen (masculine), which still influences the word twain today.
Evolution of the Arabic digit
The symbol we use today for the number 2 started in ancient India, where it was shown as two horizontal lines. Many East Asian languages, like Chinese and Japanese, still use a similar shape. Over time, this shape changed in different ways. In some old Indian scripts, the lines were tilted, and in others, they were curved. Eventually, in Arabic writing, it looked like a dotless question mark. Through more changes, we got the digit 2 that we know today.
In science
The number 2 is very important in science. It is the first magic number, which means it tells us how many electrons can fit in the innermost shell of an atom. This helps scientists understand how atoms are built and how they work together.
