The Mimosoideae are a traditional subfamily of plants in the pea family, Fabaceae. They include trees, herbs, lianas, and shrubs that mostly grow in tropical and subtropical climates. These plants are known for their special flowers, which have petals that are folded in a particular way and many noticeable stamens.

Recent studies of plant family trees have shown that the Mimosoideae are closely related to another group called Caesalpinioideae. Scientists now often call them the Mimosoid clade within the Caesalpinioideae. This group has about 40 different genera and more than 2,500 species, making it an important part of the plant world.

Taxonomy

The lead tree, Leucaena leucocephala, is used for fiber and livestock fodder.

Some ways to group plants put the Mimosoideae as their own family called Mimosaceae. But most modern scientists think of them as part of a bigger group called Fabaceae. They used to be split into four groups, but new research shows these don't work well. Instead, scientists have found several informal groups, but they haven’t given them official names yet. Also, the plant group once called Acacia has been split into five different groups.

The Mimosoideae include many different plants grouped in several ways, such as the Adenanthera group, the Entada group, and the Acacia Clade. These groups help scientists understand how these plants are related to each other. There are also many fossil woods that scientists have found, which help us learn about plants from long ago.

Systematics

Modern molecular phylogenetics helps scientists understand how different plants are related. It shows that the Mimosoideae, a group of plants in the pea family, are closely connected to another group called Caesalpinioideae. Recent studies by experts now classify Mimosoideae as part of the larger Caesalpinioideae group, calling them the Mimosoid clade. This helps us better organize and understand these plants.

Acacieae

Senegalia catechu

Acacieae (Dumort., 1829) is a large group of plants that belongs to the Mimosoideae. These plants grow in tropical, subtropical, and warm-temperate areas. They include five or six different groups of plants, called genera, and around 1,450 species.

These plants can be trees, shrubs, or climbing plants. Some have sharp spines for protection. Their leaves are special, often divided into smaller parts or changed into flat, leaf-like structures. The flowers are usually yellow or cream-colored and have many noticeable stamens. The plants also produce pods and seeds with hard outer coatings.
