Architecture is the study and practice of designing structures, especially those that people can live or work in. It combines civil engineering with artistic creativity, making it both a science and a visual art. Architects go through many steps to create a building, including sketching ideas, planning layouts, designing details, and constructing the final structure. Buildings are more than just places to stay; they often serve as symbols of culture and are considered works of art.

In adding the dome to the Florence Cathedral (Italy) in the early 15th century, the architect Filippo Brunelleschi not only transformed the building and the city, but also the role and status of the architect.

The practice of architecture dates back to the prehistoric era, with each civilization using buildings to express their culture across all seven continents. One of the oldest written texts about architecture is De architectura by the Roman architect Vitruvius, which said a good building should have durability, utility, and beauty. Later thinkers like Leon Battista Alberti and Louis Sullivan added new ideas, such as the famous phrase "form follows function". Today, sustainable architecture is also very important.

Architecture started with simple, rural buildings that were copied when they worked well. Over time, ancient cities built impressive temples and palaces, while later periods like the Middle Ages created beautiful Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals. The Renaissance brought back classical styles, and after World War I, modern architecture introduced new designs using modern materials and shapes. Today, architecture includes everything from tall skyscrapers to ship design and interior decorating.

Definitions

Architecture refers to the design and construction of buildings and other structures. It is both an art and a science, involving the planning and creation of places where people live, work, and gather. Architects consider many factors, such as function, safety, and beauty, when they design everything from tiny furniture to large city spaces.

Architecture can also describe the style and method used in building structures, as well as the overall form and organization of a place. It combines knowledge from many fields, including art, science, technology, and understanding human needs. The work of architects ranges from urban design to detailed construction plans.

The philosophy of architecture looks at the beauty and meaning of buildings and how they connect to culture. Many thinkers, from Plato to Ludwig Wittgenstein, have explored what makes architecture special.

The oldest book about architecture is De architectura by the Roman writer Vitruvius. He said a good building needs to be strong, useful, and beautiful. Later writers like Leon Battista Alberti focused on balance and harmony in design. Today, architects think about how buildings should look, work, and help the environment. One famous idea is that "Form follows function," meaning a building’s shape should fit its purpose. Modern architects also care about making buildings healthy for the planet, using materials and energy wisely.

History

Main article: History of architecture

Buildings began as simple shelters to meet basic human needs like protection and comfort. As societies grew, architecture became more complex, using local materials and skills. Over time, it evolved into a respected craft, with different cultures developing their own styles.

Ancient civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia built grand structures to show power or honor the divine. Later, Greek and Roman architecture focused on civic ideals, creating lasting designs. Asian architectures, such as those in India, China, and Japan, developed unique styles influenced by their environments and religions.

Today, architecture balances beauty with function, using new technologies to create sustainable and livable spaces for people around the world.

Types

Architecture includes many different types of design, each serving a special purpose. Residential architecture designs homes that fit people’s everyday lives, while commercial architecture creates buildings for businesses, governments, and religious groups. Industrial architecture focuses on designing special buildings for factories and warehouses, making sure they are safe for workers and goods.

Landscape architecture designs outdoor spaces like parks and gardens to make them beautiful and useful. Urban design plans how cities and towns look and work, designing streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Green design aims to build in ways that are good for the environment, using natural materials and energy-saving methods. Other types include naval architecture, which designs ships, and many modern fields that use “architecture” as a way to organize ideas and systems.
