Balabac Island is the southernmost island in the province of Palawan, and it is the westernmost undisputed island in the Philippines. It lies about 50 km (31 mi) north of Sabah, Malaysia, separated by the Balabac Strait. This makes it an important location for both the Philippines and Malaysia due to its position near their shared maritime border.

The island is part of the municipality of Balabac, which is made up of 14 barangays, with six more barangays located on nearby smaller islands. Balabac Island has a rich natural environment and is known for its beautiful beaches and marine life, attracting visitors interested in fishing, diving, and exploring its unique ecosystems.

Because of its location, Balabac Island plays a role in regional discussions about maritime boundaries and resource management between the Philippines and Malaysia. The people who live there have developed a way of life that balances fishing, small-scale farming, and tourism, making it a fascinating place to learn about island communities and their connections to nearby countries.

Geography

Balabac Island is home to many special animals, including the Philippine mouse-deer. It has been named an Important Bird Area because many rare birds live there, such as grey imperial-pigeons, Palawan scops-owls, and Palawan hornbills.

The island is mainly inhabited by the Molbogs, a Muslim group. They work as farmers and fishers and trade goods with nearby places like Mapun and Sabah.

Historical and strategic context

Balabac Island borders the West Philippine Sea, part of the South China Sea, where several countries have territorial disputes. These countries include the Philippines, mainland China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. The island is near Mischief Reef, known as Panganiban Reef in the Philippines, which China turned into a large artificial island in 1995.

Balabac is home to Naval Station Narciso Del Rosario of the Philippine Navy. It also has a military runway that will be used by the United States Military under an agreement called the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. This runway is part of a program to support both military and civilian aircraft.
