For many years, Bongao was a center for Bajau culture. In the 1300s, Muslim teachers from Arabia came and built the first mosque in the Philippines. Later, the nearby Sultanate of Sulu helped spread Islam in the area.

Bongao became an official town on July 1, 1958. Before the 1970s, it was a small village, but it became the capital of Tawi-Tawi when the government moved there for safety during a time of conflict. This brought growth and many new people to the town.

Geography

The municipality of Bongao is found on several islands, including Bongao Island, where the main town is located, Sanga-Sanga Island, Pababag Island, and the western end of Tawi-Tawi Island. It is divided into 35 smaller areas called barangays, grouped into two regions: Mainland and Islands.

Bongao experiences a tropical rainforest climate, which means it has lots of rain throughout the year. Each barangay includes smaller neighborhoods known as puroks, and some also have even smaller areas called sitios.

Culture

Bongao is a small but interesting place where many different cultures live together. In the town center, you can find mosques for the Muslim community, a Catholic church, a church for Protestant people, and a Chinese temple.

Near Bongao, there is a special place called the Balobok Rock Shelter-Cave. Scientists have found evidence that people lived there between 5,000 to 8,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest known homes of humans in Southeast Asia. In 2017, the government named this site an Important Cultural Property.

Economy

Bongao's main street, Datu Halun Street, is where the town hall is located and serves as the commercial center. Most businesses here are run by local people. Because the area is peaceful, some Chinese families from Zamboanga have also started businesses in Bongao.

Several banks operate in Bongao, including Land Bank of the Philippines, Philippine National Bank, and Metrobank. A government investment company named Quedancor has also recently begun operating there. In April 2010, the Midway Plaza Mall opened, becoming the first shopping mall in Tawi-Tawi.
