François Daviet de Foncenex was born in Thonon in the Duchy of Savoy in 1734. He studied under the famous mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange at the Accademia di Torino. Daviet became a lieutenant in the Royal Sardinian Army and later served as governor of Sassari and Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Daviet wrote important papers about math and physics. One paper discussed imaginary numbers, and another explained basic ideas in mechanics. His work helped advance the understanding of these subjects during his time.
