The furry fandom is a subculture of people who enjoy anthropomorphic animal characters—characters that look like animals but behave like humans. Members of this fandom, called furries, often create their own animal characters known as fursonas. Many furries wear special costumes called fursuits that make them look like their animal characters.

Furries like to meet and share their interests online and at special meetings called furry conventions. These events can have thousands of people and often support good causes in the community. The furry fandom began in the 1980s, growing bigger as more people started using the internet to connect with one another.

Even though some people think badly about furries, the fandom includes people of all ages and backgrounds. It has become a place where many can express themselves freely and make new friends who share their love for animal characters.

Definition

Members of the furry fandom, called furries, are people who enjoy anthropomorphic animal characters. Anthropomorphic characters have human-like traits, such as showing emotions, talking, or wearing clothes, though not all of these traits are needed. The idea of giving human qualities to animals is very old, appearing in cave paintings from the Upper Paleolithic time.

Furries often have their own animal characters, known as fursonas, and many join together in a friendly community. Some furries like animals with fur, while others enjoy characters that look like reptiles, called "scalies." Not all furries think the same way, and many feel proud to be part of this special group, different from other fan groups like the anime and manga fandom.

History

The furry fandom began in 1976 when cartoonists Ken Fletcher and Reed Waller created an art magazine called Vootie. This magazine featured art with animal characters and was shared at local events. The term "furry" started being used around 1980 at a science fiction event, where fans discussed stories with characters that looked like humans but had animal features.

In the 1990s, the internet helped furry fans connect. The first furry convention, called Confurence 0, was held in Costa Mesa, California in 1989. Today, many furries share their art on websites like FurAffinity and chat on platforms such as Telegram, Twitter, Discord, and Reddit.

Inspiration

Many people who are part of the furry fandom say that cartoons and stories with animal characters sparked their interest. A survey from 2007 showed that furries often loved cartoons when they were kids and liked science fiction stories more than others did.

The internet is the most common way people find the furry fandom, unlike sports fans who often join because of friends or family. Some furries feel like they always belonged to this community but didn’t know it until they met others online. Others discover it through friends, role-playing games, or while exploring different kinds of media. The main reason people stay in the fandom is feeling like they belong to a friendly community.

Activities and interests

Most furries enjoy visual art, attending conventions, reading literature, and connecting with others online. They are especially interested in anthropomorphic animal characters. Many create their own characters, called fursonas, and use them in role-playing games and online chats.

Fans often make crafts like plush toys and elaborate costumes known as fursuits, which they wear for fun or at events. Furries also enjoy attending conventions where they can meet others, buy art, and participate in workshops. The internet is full of furry websites and online communities where members share art and stories. Some popular webcomics and animated series created by furries have even won awards.

Demographics and sociology

While some furry fans create and wear costumes called "fursuits" depicting their characters, not all of them do.

The International Anthropomorphic Research Project (IARP) has studied the furry fandom. In their 2016 publication, Furscience, they found that the average adult furry is between 23 and 27 years old, with most being under 30. Over two-thirds of furries identify as male, while about a quarter identify as female. Many also identify as transgender or non-binary.

Furries are often White, with small percentages identifying as Asian, Black, or Hispanic. They tend to be more politically liberal and less religious than the general population. Many furries consider themselves fans of anime, video games, or music. A common practice in the fandom is creating a fursona—an anthropomorphic animal character that represents oneself. Most furries have one or two fursonas, with popular species including wolves, foxes, and dragons.

Public perception and media coverage

Early stories about furries in magazines such as Wired, Loaded, and Vanity Fair often focused on the idea that furries were mainly interested in sex. Shows like The Simpsons, ER, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation also portrayed furries in exaggerated ways. Furries say these stories from the late 1990s and early 2000s were not true.

By the later 2000s, reporters began to write more accurate stories. One reporter at a furry convention in 2006 said that, unlike what some media showed, the event was really about people talking, drawing, and having fun together. In 2007, another reporter who went to a convention without telling anyone she was a reporter found that the wild behavior she expected did not happen. Over time, more positive stories appeared, showing that furries are welcome in many places and can even bring joy to others, like when they met refugee children in Vancouver.
