IAU designated constellations by solid angle

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes 88 constellations of stars, which help us organize and understand the night sky. These constellations are ranked by the solid angle they cover, measured in square degrees and millisteradians. This ranking shows us which constellations appear larger or smaller to our eyes when we look up at the stars.

The way we define the borders between these constellations was set in 1930 by astronomer Eugène Delporte, working for the IAU. Before this, there were no agreed-upon boundaries, making it hard to study the sky in a consistent way. Delporte drew the lines along right ascension and declination, which are like imaginary grid lines in space.

Because Earth’s axis slowly wobbles over time—a process called precession—the borders Delporte created for the epoch B1875.0 look slightly tilted on modern star maps, such as those for J2000. Even so, the size, or solid angle, of each constellation stays the same, no matter how the borders appear to shift over the centuries.
