Jeremy Rifkin, born on January 26, 1945, is an American economic and social theorist, writer, public speaker, political advisor, and activist. He has written 23 books exploring how scientific and technological changes affect the economy, jobs, society, and the environment. Some of his well-known books include The Age of Resilience (2022), The Green New Deal (2019), The Zero Marginal Cost Society (2014), The Third Industrial Revolution (2011), The Empathic Civilization (2010), and The European Dream (2004).
Rifkin is best known for creating the “Third Industrial Revolution” plan, which aims to help economies become more sustainable while addressing energy security and climate change. This idea was endorsed by the European Parliament in 2007. In 2015, it was reported that Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had read and used ideas from Rifkin's book The Third Industrial Revolution in China’s thirteenth Five-Year Plan. His ideas have also influenced Germany’s move toward a low-carbon economy.
Rifkin has taught at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania since 1995, helping business leaders understand how to shift toward sustainable practices. He is highly respected worldwide, ranking 123rd in a global survey of the most influential voices and among the top ten economic thinkers. Over the past 35 years, he has spoken to many Fortune 500 companies, governments, and organizations.
Biography
Jeremy Rifkin was born in Denver, Colorado and grew up in Chicago. He studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1967. Rifkin was active in the peace movement and later attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
In the 1970s, Rifkin founded the People's Bicentennial Commission and organized protests against oil companies. He also started the Foundation on Economic Trends in 1977, focusing on environmental and economic issues. Rifkin became known for his criticism of the biotechnology industry.
Rifkin wrote many books about how science and technology affect our world. His works discuss topics like energy, the economy, and the environment. He also helped start important conversations about climate change and the future of work.
