Leading zero

A leading zero is any digit that comes before the first nonzero digit in a number string in positional notation. For example, James Bond's famous identifier, 007, has two leading zeros. These zeros appear at the beginning of a number but do not change its value. In most cases, leading zeros before the decimal point can be omitted without losing any information.
When we talk about whole numbers, or integers, we usually do not write leading zeros. For instance, the number four is written as "4" and not "04" or "004". The only time we might see a single zero is when we want to show the number zero itself.
However, leading zeros become important when we deal with numbers smaller than one, which are written after a decimal point. In these cases, leading zeros between the decimal point and the first nonzero digit help us understand the size of the number. For example, in the number 0.001, the two zeros after the decimal point tell us that the number is very small. These zeros cannot be removed because they change the meaning of the number.
On the other hand, trailing zeros – zeros that come after the last nonzero digit after the decimal point – can sometimes be left out without changing the meaning. For example, the number 0.00100 can be written as 0.001. Understanding the difference between leading and trailing zeros helps us write and read numbers correctly in many areas, from everyday calculations to scientific work.
Occurrence
Leading zeros are often seen on digital displays like seven-segment displays, stopwatches, odometers, and digital clocks. They are also used by older computer programs, digital cameras, and many systems that need numbers of the same length.
In some cases, leading zeros give special meaning. For example, James Bond’s identifier is 007, where the zeros are important. They are also used in telephone numbers and in games like roulette, where "00" is different from "0". Some sports teams and players use numbers with leading zeros to make them unique.
Advantages
Leading zeros help organize numbers so they line up correctly when sorted, like putting files in alphabetical order. For example, the number 02 comes before 11, even though 2 is smaller than 11. This helps when dealing with lists of numbers.
In places like pharmacies, leading zeros are important to avoid mistakes. Writing a dose as 0.2 mg instead of .2 mg helps make sure someone reading it sees the decimal point clearly, which can prevent serious dosing errors.

In computer programming, a zero before a number can change how that number is understood. For example, in some languages like Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP, and bash, writing 0020 doesn't mean the number 20. Instead, it is read as an octal number, which equals 16 in normal counting. This can cause mistakes if someone adds a zero by accident.
In some places, like Czechia, a zero in front of a house number used to show a special kind of address for temporary buildings. This helped people tell these addresses apart from regular ones.
