Archimedes was an ancient Greek scientist who lived around 287 BC to 212 BC. He made many important discoveries in math, physics, and engineering. Because of his clever ideas, many things today are named after him.

Some of these include machines and principles that help us understand the world. For example, there's the Archimedes' principle, which explains how objects float in water. There are also tools and inventions, like the Archimedean screw, used to move water from low to high places.

Being named after Archimedes means that these ideas and inventions are important and still used today. They show how his genius continues to influence science and technology even thousands of years later.

Mathematical concepts

Many important ideas in math are named after Archimedes. These include shapes like the Archimedean spiral and Archimedean solid, as well as concepts such as the Archimedean property and Archimedes' axiom. There are also interesting problems and formulas linked to him, like Archimedes' cattle problem and the Heron–Archimedes formula.

Physical concepts

Archimedes has two important ideas in physics named after him. Archimedes paradox is one of them, and Archimedes' principle is the other. These ideas help us understand how things behave in water and other liquids.

Technology

Archimedes made many important inventions that are still remembered today. Some of his most famous creations include the Archimedes' pulley, used for lifting heavy objects, and the Archimedes' screw, which helps move water. Other interesting ideas named after him are the Archimedes' heat ray and the Claw of Archimedes.

Besides his inventions, several modern things carry Archimedes' name. There is the Archimedes bridge, a special kind of Archimede combined cycle power plant, and even a ship called the SS Archimedes. In the world of computers, we find tools like Archimedes (CAD) and a famous old computer called the Acorn Archimedes.

Oath

Some engineers take an oath called the Archimedean Oath in honor of the famous scientist Archimedes. This oath reminds them to work with honesty and integrity in their profession.

Astronomical names

Several features in space are named after Archimedes. There is an asteroid called 3600 Archimedes, a crater on the Moon named Archimedes (crater), and a mountain range on the Moon called Montes Archimedes. These names honor Archimedes for his amazing contributions to science and mathematics.

Written works of Archimedes

The written works of Archimedes include several important texts that have survived through history. One notable example is the Archimedes Palimpsest, which is the only work whose name traditionally includes "Archimedes." These writings showcase the genius and contributions of Archimedes to mathematics and physics.

Other

Archimedes has inspired names in stories, science, and websites. In T. H. White's novel The Sword in the Stone, Merlin's owl is named Archimedes. There is also a type of bryozoan called Archimedes (bryozoan), a website named Archimedes-lab.org, and a term called Pseudo-Archimedes.
