It lasted from about 419.62 million years ago to 413.02 million years ago. This stage was an important time in Earth's history when many new kinds of life began to appear and evolve in the oceans.
The Lochkovian gets its name from the village of Lochkov in the Czech Republic, which is now part of the city of Prague. Scientists have carefully defined this stage using rock layers found in the Lochkow Formation at a place called the Klonk Section in Prague.
In North America, the same time period is called either Gedinnian or Helderbergian, showing how different places can name the same part of Earth's history in their own ways. The Lochkovian helps scientists understand how life on our planet developed many millions of years ago.
