Machilis nipponica
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
[Machilis](/wiki/Machilis) nipponica is a small, ancient type of insect that belongs to a special group called jumping bristletails. It is part of the family Machilidae and the order Archaeognatha. These insects are very interesting because they have remained almost unchanged for millions of years, acting like living fossils that help scientists learn about life from long ago.
The species Machilis nipponica is mainly found in parts of Asia, particularly in Japan, where it lives in places with moist soil and leaf litter. These tiny creatures have long, bristle-like structures on their backs, which they use to sense their environment.
Although they look similar to lice, they are not related and actually live on land, preferring quiet, hidden spots in nature. Studying Machilis nipponica helps us understand how some animals have survived through huge changes in the Earth’s history.
