Madrid metropolitan area

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The Madrid metropolitan area is a large urban area in the centre of the Iberian peninsula, surrounding the municipality of Madrid, Spain. It is the largest metropolitan area in Spain, the 2nd largest in the European Union, and the 54th largest in the world. With a population of about 6.98 million people in 2021, it covers an area of 5,335.97 square kilometres (2,060.23 mi2).

The area includes two main zones of urban development. The inner ring, known as primera corona, includes cities like Alcorcón, Leganés, Getafe, and Móstoles. The outer ring, called segunda corona, includes places such as Villaviciosa de Odón, Parla, and Valdemoro. These suburbs stretch along major roads leading away from Madrid.

The Madrid metropolitan area plays a vital economic role. In 2020, its GDP was estimated at €210 billion, which is over 95% of the GDP of the entire region of Madrid. This makes it a key centre for jobs and growth in Spain. However, challenges remain, such as improving transportation and reducing environmental impact.
