Old Billy, also known simply as Billy or Ol' Billy, held the record as the longest-living horse ever verified, having lived for 62 years. He was born in Woolston, Cheshire, England, in 1760. Billy worked as a barge horse, pulling heavy barges along the canals. He was described as looking like a large cob or shire horse, with brown fur and a distinctive white blaze on his face.
Billy passed away on 27 November 1822 at the home of William Earle, who was a director of the Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company, located in Everton, Liverpool. Even after his death, Billy's legacy continued. His skull is preserved and displayed in the Manchester Museum. Additionally, a portrait of Billy can be found at the Warrington Museum & Art Gallery. In 2024, his taxidermied head was returned to Warrington from the Bedford Art Gallery & Museum thanks to efforts by a local group called the 'Bring Back Old Billy Committee!'.
