Psittaculidae

Psittaculidae is a family of parrots, commonly called Old World parrots. Though this name might sound special, it is actually a bit confusing. The term “Old World” usually means places like Europe, Asia, and Africa, but not all birds in this family live there. Some also live in other parts of the world.

This group of parrots includes six subfamilies: Psittrichasinae, Agapornithinae, Loriinae, Platycercinae, Psittacellinae, and Psittaculinae. Taxonomy

The family Psittaculidae includes 200 species of parrots and is divided into 47 different groups called genera. Some species in this family have gone extinct in recent history.

Some groups of parrots were found to share such close relations that they might need to be grouped together in new ways. All of this research helps scientists classify and understand these beautiful birds better.
