A research university or a research-intensive university is a university that is committed to research as a central part of its mission. These universities are important places for creating new knowledge, teaching students how to think deeply, and preparing future experts in many fields. They often award doctoral degrees, which allow students to become experts and teachers in their areas of study.

Research universities can be public or private institutions. Many of their undergraduate courses focus on learning important academic skills rather than specific jobs, but graduates from these universities are often highly valued by employers because they learn strong life skills, such as critical thinking.

Unlike some other types of colleges, like liberal arts colleges, research universities place a big emphasis on faculty members conducting research and sharing their findings. This helps keep the university at the forefront of discoveries and advancements in many areas of study.

History

The idea of a research university began in the early 1800s in Prussia, where Wilhelm von Humboldt wanted schools to focus on teaching and discovering new knowledge in areas like science, social studies, and the humanities.

In the United States, research universities grew in the late 1800s. Schools like Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Stanford began adding advanced studies to their teaching. These universities have played important roles in many big discoveries and changes around the world.

Characteristics

Research universities are special schools that focus a lot on discovering new things and teaching students based on that research. They usually offer many different subjects and have many students who are studying for advanced degrees. These universities also try to bring in money from outside sources to support their work.

These universities are often large and have many students and teachers. They value freedom to explore ideas and creativity. Teachers at these schools also work on research projects. The best research universities are measured by how much research they do and how many different areas of study they cover.
