Ring-shaped seismicity structures

Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Discoverer experience

Ring-shaped seismicity structures are special patterns found in earthquake activity. These patterns happen when the points where earthquakes start, called epicenters, line up to form a shape that looks like a ring or an oval. Scientists, called seismologists, often see these rings before a big earthquake happens. By studying these patterns, they can get clues about where and how strong future earthquakes might be.

Most of the earthquakes in these rings are not very strong. They happen evenly on all sides of the oval shape. This helps scientists understand what might come next and prepare better for larger earthquakes. These structures give important information that can help keep people safe.

Notable examples

Scientists studied a special pattern in earthquakes in southern Kamchatka. They noticed that the spots where earthquakes happened formed a ring shape. These patterns can be signs that a big earthquake might happen later.

From 1973 to 2024, they looked at many earthquakes, including a big one on August 17, 2024. They found three ring shapes at different depths under the ground. Big earthquakes often happen about 10 to 15 years after these ring patterns appear. In Kamchatka, a big earthquake happened in 2016 after such patterns were seen. Based on what they know, scientists thought there might be a very big earthquake between 2026 and 2031.
