History

Roblox Corporation was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004. Baszucki had earlier started an educational software company and worked with Cassel on physics simulation software before they created Roblox. They started by developing a game called DynaBlocks, which later became Roblox and was officially released on September 1, 2006.

Over the years, Roblox Corporation grew significantly. By 2024, it employed over 2,400 people. The company expanded internationally, launched new features, and introduced programs to help brands use Roblox for advertising. Despite some changes like office moves and adjustments in hiring, Roblox continued to develop and support its community of players and creators.

Reception

Roblox Corporation has received many awards and recognitions for its work. It has been ranked among the top mobile game developers by Pocket Gamer.biz, and Fortune has listed it as one of the best workplaces in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was also named one of the most innovative companies in the world by Fast Company.

Some people have criticized Roblox for how it handles money from young game creators on its platform. The company has said it plans to make changes to better support its community.

Legal disputes

Roblox Corporation has faced several legal challenges over the years. In 2016, Cinemark Theatres sued Roblox for allowing user-created games that used their trademarks without permission. In 2021, the National Music Publishers' Association accused Roblox of allowing users to share copyrighted music without permission, but the two sides later reached an agreement.

In other cases, Roblox has both sued others and been sued itself. For example, in 2021, Roblox sued a YouTuber for making false threats during a conference, and settled the case out of court. These legal disputes show the many challenges Roblox faces in managing its large and active community.
