Shijingshan District (Chinese: 石景山区; pinyin: Shíjǐngshān Qū) is an urban district in the city of Beijing. It is located to the west of Beijing’s city center and is part of the beautiful Western Hills area. Shijingshan borders Haidian to the northeast and east, Fengtai to the south, and Mentougou to the west.

The district covers 86 square kilometers (33 square miles), making it one of the smaller districts in Beijing’s urban area. Despite its size, it is home to many people, with a population recorded at 489,439 during the 2000 Census. The postal code for Shijingshan is 100043.

Although the nearby hills around Yunju Temple share a similar name, they have different Chinese characters and are not directly connected to Shijingshan District. This area is known for its mix of residential neighborhoods and recreational spots, offering both a peaceful lifestyle and access to the city’s attractions.

Transportation

The western stretch of the 5th Ring Road runs through Shijingshan. The area is also served by the Beijing subway and China National Highway 109.

Important areas

Beijing Shijingshan Amusement Park

Shijingshan District in Beijing has several important places. These include the North China University of Technology, a place for learning and studying. There is also the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery, a historic site. The district is home to the fun Shijingshan Amusement Park, where families can enjoy various rides and activities. Another key spot is the Shougang industrial complex, which used to be a big factory area. Lastly, the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is located here, where scientists study tiny particles and energy.

Economy

In 2017, the economy of Shijingshan District was quite strong. The total value of goods and services produced in the area was 53.54 billion yuan. This means that, on average, each person living there contributed about 87.5 thousand yuan to the district's economy.

Sports

Shijingshan District in Beijing was an important place for big sports events. It hosted the BMX and track-cycling events during the 2008 Summer Olympics at the Laoshan Velodrome. Later, it also hosted the Big Air events for snowboarding and freestyle skiing during the 2022 Winter Olympics at the Big Air Shougang.

Climate

Shijingshan District has a humid continental climate, with an average annual temperature of 13.2 °C (55.8 °F). July is the warmest month, with temperatures around 27.0 °C (80.6 °F), while January is the coldest, averaging about −2.7 °C (27.1 °F). The area receives about 565.9 mm (22.28 in) of rainfall each year, with July being the wettest month.
