Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is a beautiful natural area covering 104 km2 in the Singalila Range of western Sikkim. It is located near the border with Nepal to the west and the state of West Bengal to the south. This sanctuary is special because it is home to many rhododendron trees, which bloom beautifully from March until May.
Visitors to the sanctuary can enjoy walking through forests filled with these colorful flowers. The area is also rich in other plants and animals, making it an important place for nature lovers and scientists who study wildlife. The sanctuary helps protect these natural treasures for future generations to enjoy.
Fauna
The Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is home to many interesting birds. Two of these birds are the Tibetan serin Tibetan serin and the Spotted Laughingthrush Spotted Laughingthrush. These birds make their home in this beautiful area, adding to its rich wildlife.
Access
The Barsey Sanctuary can be reached from three points: Hilley, Dentam, and Soreng. The most popular entry point is Hilley because it is accessible by road. From Hilley, Varsey is just a 4 km trek along a path shaded by beautiful rhododendron trees.
Tourism
The Sikkim government allows visitors to stay in a special forest area at the top of a hill. There are also several places to stay for visitors near the entrance of Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary and in a small village called Okhrey, where many people from the Sherpa community live.
