Washington Township is one of the fourteen townships in Auglaize County, Ohio, United States. It is a small community where about 1,944 people lived, according to the 2020 census.

Geography

Washington Township is located in the southern part of Auglaize County, Ohio. It shares borders with several other townships, including Moulton Township to the north, Pusheta Township to the east, and Saint Marys Township to the west. The village of New Knoxville lies in the southwestern part of the township.

The township covers an area of 31.1 square miles (80.5 km2), according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Name and history

Washington Township is one of forty-three Washington Townships statewide. It was originally part of Allen County before becoming part of Auglaize County. The township was formed in 1836.

Government

Washington Township is led by a three-member board of trustees. These trustees are chosen by voters in November during odd-numbered years and begin their four-year terms on January 1 the next year. Two trustees are elected in the year after a presidential election, and one is elected in the year before. There is also a township fiscal officer who is elected to a four-year term starting on April 1 following the election, which happens in November before a presidential election. If a seat becomes empty, the remaining trustees choose a replacement.

Public services

Washington Township is divided among three school districts: the Wapakoneta City School District, the Saint Marys City School District, and the New Knoxville Local School District.

Different parts of the township get their mail from four post offices. The northwestern part is served by the Saint Marys post office, the northeastern part by Wapakoneta, the southern part by New Knoxville, and the far southeastern part by the Botkins post office.
