Wonka is a 2023 musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby. It serves as a prequel to the classic 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which is based on the beloved novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The movie stars Timothée Chalamet as the famous chocolatier Willy Wonka, with a talented cast including Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant. The story explores Wonka's early days as a chocolatier and his encounters with future rivals.

Development of the film began when Warner Bros. Pictures regained the rights to the character in October 2016, planning an origin story. The film was designed as a "companion piece" to the original movie, sharing its music, themes, and visual style, especially featuring the Oompa Loompas. Filming took place across several locations in the United Kingdom, including Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Watford, as well as Oxford, Lyme Regis, Bath, St Albans, and the Rivoli Ballroom in Crofton Park, London. The film's songs were written by Neil Hannon, and its score was composed by Joby Talbot.

The movie premiered in London at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre on November 28, 2023, and was released in the United Kingdom on December 8, and in the United States on December 15. It received positive reviews, especially for Chalamet's performance and its visual appeal, and was a major success at the box office, earning over $634 million worldwide. The film was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film, and Chalamet received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. A sequel is currently being developed. For the soundtrack, see Wonka (soundtrack).

Plot

Willy Wonka, a young chocolatier, dreams of opening his own chocolate shop and arrives at the Galéries Gourmet. However, he is forced to stay at Mrs. Scrubitt's boarding house and unknowingly signs a difficult contract because he cannot read. Wonka creates special chocolates called "hoverchocs" that let people fly, but rival chocolate makers take away his earnings.

Wonka befriends Noodle, a girl living at the boarding house, who teaches him to read. They discover that a group of chocolate makers, called the "Chocolate Cartel," tries to stop Wonka by using unfair tricks. Together with his new friends, Wonka plans to sell chocolate to raise money and escape his debts. After opening his shop, it is destroyed by the Cartel, but Wonka and his friends cleverly expose their wrongdoings. In the end, Wonka reunites Noodle with her mother and turns an old castle into his very own chocolate factory.

Production

In October 2016, Warner Bros. Pictures reacquired the rights to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory character Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl's estate. The project was developed by producers David Heyman and Michael Siegel. In February 2018, Paul King was chosen to direct the film. King had previously worked on the [Paddington] (/w/10) films but decided to move on to new projects. The film was planned as a prequel to the original story.

Paul King worked with Simon Farnaby to write the screenplay. They set the story in the 1940s and created new characters inspired by Dahl’s other stories. Timothée Chalamet was chosen to play Willy Wonka after impressing King with his performances in other films. Filming took place in the United Kingdom, with scenes shot in historic locations and studios. Visual effects were provided by several companies to create over 1,163 special shots.
