Overview

30 Hudson Yards is a very tall building in New York City. It is in Midtown Manhattan, close to places like Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea, and Penn Station. The building is part of a big plan to rebuild an area near a train yard.

Height and Position

As of May 2025, it is the seventh-tallest building in New York City and the ninth-tallest in the United States.

The Edge Viewing Area

The building has a special viewing area called The Edge on the 100th floor. This viewing area is 1,100 feet high and has clear flooring, making it one of the highest outdoor viewing spots in the world.

Offices

The building used to be where a company called WarnerMedia worked, but that company joined with another in 2022. Today, other companies like Warner Bros. Discovery and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co have offices there.

History

The groundbreaking ceremony for 30 Hudson Yards happened on December 4, 2012. Early work focused on building a special platform over the rail yard. This platform rests on deep supports drilled into solid rock.

In 2013, Time Warner said they would move most of their offices to 30 Hudson Yards. In mid-2015, construction started after Related got a big loan. By January 2016, the first few floors were finished. Work on the observation deck at the top began in April 2018 and was nearly done by mid-2018.

The building opened on March 15, 2019. One month later, WarnerMedia sold their office space but agreed to rent it back for 15 years.

Tenants

30 Hudson Yards has many different places to visit. You can find big names like Home Box Office, Inc., Wells Fargo, and The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards. Each floor has a special use, such as offices, event spaces, and an observation deck with great views of the city. Some floors are just for moving between sections or for things like elevators and stairs.

Studios

The 30 Hudson Yards building has many studios for TV shows. Some studios are used for shows like Early Start, CNN This Morning, and Quest Means Business. Other studios host popular programs such as Erin Burnett OutFront, Fareed Zakaria GPS, CNN News Central, Anderson Cooper 360°, and CNN Newsnight. Each studio is made to be a good space for making news and entertainment for viewers.

Architecture and design

Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the building. Thornton Tomasetti was the main structural engineer, and Jaros, Baum & Bolles handled mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services. The building was planned to be 1,337 feet tall but was made shorter to 1,270 feet. It is the tallest in the area. Inside, WarnerMedia's space has a cafeteria, a fitness center, a large auditorium, a cinema, and an outdoor area. The outdoor area makes the building look like a duck to some people.

The lobby has special art by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. It includes 11 shiny steel balls hanging from the ceiling. They symbolize unity and different cultures.

Edge

The building has an outdoor observation deck called "Edge" on the 100th and 101st floors. It reaches up to 1,100 feet tall. Edge has a special outdoor terrace that sticks out 80 feet from the building. It offers great views of Manhattan and the Hudson River. It is the second highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere, after the SkyPod at the CN Tower in Canada. Edge has a glass triangle in the floor that looks down to the street 1,131 feet below. Visitors can safely lean over a glass barrier to see the area below. Edge opened in March 2020 but closed briefly due to health concerns. It reopened in September 2020. Since 2025, it has also hosted a seasonal pop-up nightclub called Marquee.

City Climb at Edge

In October 2021, a new attraction called "City Climb at Edge" was added. It lets visitors climb an outdoor staircase at the very top of the building. It opened to the public on November 9, 2021. It is the highest open-air building climb in the world.
