Ada Lovelace Day
Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated each year on the second Tuesday of October. This special day honors the wonderful contributions that women have made in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, called STEM fields.
The day is named after Ada Lovelace, a brilliant mathematician and one of the first computer science pioneers. She lived a long time ago, but her smart ideas about computers still inspire people today.
Ada Lovelace Day started in 2009 as a day for people to write blog posts about women in these important fields. Over time, it has become a big event celebrated in many countries, with conferences and gatherings to share ideas and celebrate women’s achievements in STEM.
History
The day started in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson. It happens on the second Tuesday in October. The goal is to share the important work women do in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Since then, Ada Lovelace Day has become a worldwide event. Places like museums, universities, and professional groups plan activities. These events happen in October and November. They include talks, film showings, and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to honor women’s achievements in STEM.
