Aeneas
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Aeneas was a famous hero from old stories. He came from the city of Troy. His father was a Trojan prince named Anchises. His mother was the goddess Aphrodite, who is also called Venus in Roman stories.
Aeneas fought for Troy in the big war told in Homer's Iliad. He does not appear much in Greek stories, but he becomes very important in Roman stories. This is especially true in a book called the Aeneid written by a poet named Virgil.
In the Aeneid, Aeneas is said to be the ancestor of the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. Because of this, he is seen as the first true hero of Rome. His story links the fall of Troy to the beginning of Rome. This makes him an important figure in learning about old history and myths. Some say that in Norse mythology, he is linked to a god named Víðarr.
Etymology
Aeneas is the Roman version of the Greek name Αἰνείας (Aineías). His name first appears in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite. Some think the name means "terrible," because Aeneas caused sadness to Aphrodite.
Later writers thought the name meant "in-dweller," suggesting Aeneas lived in a human body as a god. But we do not really know where his name comes from. In the Aeneid, the poet Virgil uses special words to describe Aeneas, like pater ("father") and pius ("pious"). These words show Aeneas as a good leader and someone who follows the gods.
Greek myth and epos
The story of Aeneas starts in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, loves the mortal prince Anchises. She tells him they will have a son, Aeneas. After Aeneas is born, Aphrodite gives him to nymphs to care for until he is five.
In Homer's Iliad, Aeneas is a respected Trojan warrior. He is not one of the main characters, but the gods save him twice, showing he will have an important future. He leads soldiers for the Trojans and is a good friend to Hector, the Trojan prince. His mother Aphrodite and the god Apollo watch over him in battles.
Roman myth and literature
Many Roman writers told stories about Aeneas. One early story is in a book called Origines by Cato the Elder. Later, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Livy, and Gnaeus Pompeius Trogus also wrote about him.
The most famous story is in a book called the Aeneid by Virgil. It tells how Aeneas survived when Troy fell. He traveled to Italy with his father Anchises, his son Ascanius, and some friends, called the Aeneads. Aeneas carried statues of Troy’s gods, the Lares and Penates, to Italy. On his journey, Aeneas faced storms and visited places like Sicily and Carthage. In Carthage, he met Queen Dido, but he continued his journey to fulfill his destiny. When he reached Italy, he met King Latinus and his daughter Lavinia. After some battles, Aeneas helped found the city of Lavinium, which was an important step in the founding of Rome.
Other writers like Ovid added more details. After Aeneas died, he became an immortal god called Jupiter Indiges. He is also considered an ancestor of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome.
English mythology
The Brut Chronicle tells how Britain was settled by Brutus of Troy. Brutus was said to be the son of Aeneas. Many people long ago believed this story. By the time of the Renaissance, some people began to question it.
