Almetyevsk

Almetyevsk is a city in Tatarstan, Russia. It is on the left bank of the Zay River, which flows into the Kama. The city is about 265 kilometers, or 165 miles, southeast of Kazan.

Many people live in Almetyevsk. In 2010, there were 146,393 people. In earlier years, there were fewer people: 140,437 in 2002, 129,008 in 1989, 77,000 in 1969, and 49,000 in 1959.

Almetyevsk is known for its work in oil and gas. The city has many factories and plants that help make and process these resources, which are important for the area's economy.

History

Almetyevsk is a new city in the republic of Tatarstan. It is found along a big road named R239 "Orenburgsky." This road links Kazan to Orenburg. The city started as a small place for oil processing. It was set up about 15 kilometers northwest of a train station and became an official town in 1953.

Administrative and municipal status

Almetyevsk is an important city in Tatarstan. It is the administrative center of Almetyevsky District, but it is not part of that district. Instead, it has a special status called the city of republic significance. This means it is treated the same as a district.

In local government, Almetyevsk is part of Almetyevsky Municipal District and is called Almetyevsk Urban Settlement.

Cycling capital of Russia

Almetyevsk has built excellent cycling infrastructure, which is considered the best in Russia. This started in 2016 to make the city more attractive. Because of this, many people in Almetyevsk enjoy riding bicycles as a way to get around, all year long. This great cycling setup has earned Almetyevsk the nickname of the cycling capital of Russia.

Industry

Almetyevsk is an important center for Russia's oil industry. Since 1960, the Druzhba pipeline has started in Almetyevsk. Pipelines go from this city to Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, and Subkhankulovo. The city has factories that make pipes, pumps, and tools for oil work. OAO Tatneft has offices here and helps manage the Romashkino Field in the Volga-Ural oil and gas region.

Sports

Almetyevsk has a popular ice-hockey team called "Neftyanik." The team plays in the VHL league and is supported by TatNeft. The team has won many awards, including bronze medals in the Russian Championship Higher League in 2002/2003, gold medals in 1997-1998 and 1999–2000, silver medals in the VHL in 2010/2011, and the Bratina Cup in 2015/2016.

Almetyevsk has two twin towns and sister cities. They are Balkanabat and Karamay.
