Aquiline nose
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
An aquiline nose (also called a Roman nose) is a human nose with a curved or slightly bent bridge. This shape gives the nose a special look that many people notice.
People have sometimes thought this nose shape might be linked to certain groups or even to personality traits, but there is no scientific proof for these ideas. Like other unique features such as a 'widow's peak' or different eye color, the aquiline nose can be found in many people around the world.
The term "aquiline" comes from the Latin word for eagle, which also explains why it's sometimes called the "Roman nose." This nose shape is just one of many interesting variations in human appearance.
Etymology
The word aquiline comes from a Latin word that means "eagle-like." This name describes the curved shape of an eagle's beak.
In Literature
In some stories, a Roman nose is often shown as a sign of beauty and nobility. One famous example is the main character in Aphra Behn's Oroonoko from 1688. Even though Oroonoko is an African prince, he speaks French, has straight hair, thin lips, and a nose that curves upward. These features make him stand out and show that he is noble.
Racism
Some people in the past thought that having an aquiline nose meant someone belonged to a certain group. For example, they believed it was a feature of groups like Arabs, Armenians, and Mediterranean people. During the Victorian era, some even thought this nose shape showed a person's intelligence and status. However, there is no real proof that nose shapes connect to these ideas.
Notable examples
Cleopatra
In old pictures, Cleopatra often has a nose that curves outward. The French thinker Blaise Pascal believed this nose made her very beautiful. He once wrote that if her nose had been shorter, the world might have changed.
