The architecture of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan memarlığı; اذربيجان ممرليغى) refers to the architecture development in Azerbaijan.

Architecture in Azerbaijan mixes ideas from East and West. Many old buildings such as the Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs in the walled city of Baku still stand today.

Other important old buildings show many different styles. These include the Shirvan shahs' palace in Baku, the Palace of Shaki Khans in the town of Shaki, the Surakhany Temple on the Apsheron Peninsula, several bridges over the Aras River, and a few mausoleums. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, not many big buildings were made, but special homes were built in Baku and other places. Recently, the Baku subways are known for their beautiful designs. The city planning and buildings are managed by the State Committee for City Building and Architecture of Azerbaijan Republic.

20th-century architecture of Azerbaijan

During the Soviet era, Azerbaijan built new settlements around Baku, like Binagadi, Rasulzade, Bakikhanov, Montin, and Mammadyarov. The city planning for Greater Baku included new neighborhoods and better transportation in the Absheron area.

In 1929, the first class of architects graduated from Azerbaijan’s Polytechnical Institute. Architects S. Dadashov and M. Useynov designed many important buildings, such as the Bayil factory, the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (now the Azerbaijan State Academy of Oil and Industry), and several schools in Gazakh. After World War II, work continued on the Governmental House of Baku, finishing in 1952. The Nizami Theatre and the old Ministry of Food Industry building showed new styles in design. Many schools were built across the country, and city plans for Yevlakh, Khankendi, and Sheki began.

The National Library named after M. F. Axundov opened in 1961, mixing modern and classic styles. The Presidential Palace was completed between 1977 and 1986, standing twelve stories tall with marble and granite walls. Many historic towns and areas were protected as important architectural sites.
