Arctic Basin

The Arctic Basin, also called the North Polar Basin, is a special part of the Arctic Ocean. It is an oceanic basin with two main sections. These sections are separated by something called the Lomonosov Ridge. The Lomonosov Ridge is a mid-ocean ridge between north Greenland and the New Siberian Islands. This area is surrounded by the wide edges, called continental shelves, of both Eurasia and North America.

One part of the Arctic Basin is called the Eurasian Basin. It is sometimes also named the Norwegian Basin. It includes the Nansen Basin and the Amundsen Basin.

The other part is the Amerasia Basin. It has the Canada Basin and the Makarov Basin. These areas help us learn about our planet's oceans and climate.

Exploration

Two famous explorers sailed across the Arctic Basin. Fridtjof Nansen and Otto Sverdrup used a ship called the Fram from 1893 to 1896. Later, Roald Amundsen sailed the same area in a ship named the Maud.
