Assaba is a region in southern Mauritania. It is 36,600 square kilometers big. In 2013, about 325,897 people lived there. The main city is Kiffa. Another important town is Guerou.

Assaba is named after the Assaba Massif. It borders many other regions in Mauritania. These include Brakna, Tagant, Hodh El Gharbi, Gorgol, and Guidimaka. It also shares a border with the country of Mali to the south.

The Aoukar basin is in the north and east parts of Assaba. This area used to have a bigger name long ago.

Demographics

The Assaba region is a place where many families live. In 2013, about 325,897 people lived there. A few years earlier, in 2011, there were a little more people, about 338,708.

Most people in the region worked for the government or had their own jobs. Some worked for private businesses. There were also a few places for tourists, with only 3 recorded in 2007. Many families lived together, with about 22% including extended family members.

Economy and health

In 2013, most babies in the Assaba region got important vaccines to stay healthy. By 2008, only a few families had phones, electricity, health centers, or clean water. Also, about half of the people could read and write, and very few kids went to secondary school.
