Astrakhan Khanate
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
The Khanate of Astrakhan was a small state that existed in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was located near where the Volga river flows into the Caspian Sea, close to the city now called Astrakhan. The leaders, called khans, claimed to be direct descendants of Genghis Khan, a famous ruler.
The Khanate was founded by a leader named Mahmud bin Küchük in the 1460s. Its main city was Xacitarxan, which Russian records called Astrakhan. The land it controlled was along the lower part of the Volga river and its delta, including parts of what are now Astrakhan Oblast and Kalmykia.
To the south of the Khanate was the large Caspian Sea. On its eastern side lived groups known as the Nogai Horde, while to the west were other groups of Nogais under the control of the Crimean Khanate. This area was important for trade and had a rich history.
Before the Khanate
The land near the Volga River was important because it connected trade routes from north to south and east to west. Starting in the 600s, groups of people who spoke Turkic languages lived there. They formed two early states: Old Great Bulgaria and the Khazars.
Later, the Mongols took over the area, and part of it became the Golden Horde.
In the 1400s, parts of the Golden Horde split into smaller states. This included the Khanate of Kazan in 1438, the Khanate of Crimea in 1441, and the Astrakhan Khanate in 1466. By 1502, the old steppe land was no longer part of the Golden Horde, and the people around Astrakhan became known as the Nogai Horde.
Demography and society
Most people in the Astrakhan Khanate were Astrakhan Tatars and Nogais. Merchants traded between places like Muscovy, Kazan, Crimea, Central Asia, and the Transcaucasus region.
The leaders were the khan, sultans, begs, and morzalar. The rest of the people were called qara xalıq, meaning commoners. The main religion was Sunni Islam. Later, after the Russians took over in 1556, many people turned to Russian Orthodox Christianity, but some still follow Sunni Islam today. The Kalmyks mainly practice Buddhism.
History
The Astrakhan Khanate was a small state near the Volga River in the 1400s and 1500s. It was part of a larger group called the Golden Horde. The capital city was Xacitarxan, but Russians called it Astrakhan.
The Khanate started around 1466 and became fully independent in 1502. Its rulers came from a family that began with either Mahmud or his son Qasim I. Over time, the Khanate had relationships with nearby groups like Crimea and the Nogais. In the mid-1500s, Moscow grew stronger and affected the region. In 1556, Russian forces took control of Astrakhan and moved the city to its current spot in 1558.
