The basket or hoop is an important piece of basketball equipment. It has a rim and a net and is attached to a backboard. Long ago, the first basket was made from a real peach basket by James Naismith. Now, many baskets have special breakaway rims that help keep players safe.

When a player throws the ball and it goes through the basket, it is called a field goal. This is one way players score points in the game. The basket is a key part of basketball and is used in games all around the world.

A rim, also called a hoop or basket ring, is part of basketball equipment. It is a round metal ring that holds the net. The rim is attached to a backboard. In professional games, the rim is 18 inches across. Players can make a slam dunk by jumping high enough to reach above the rim. Some rims are made to move away when hit hard, called breakaway rims.
