The bay is where water from the Chucunaque-Tuira Basin flows into the Pacific Ocean. It gets its water from the Chucunaque and Tuira rivers, which cover much of Darién Province. At the southern end of the bay is Cape Garachiné, also called Point Garachina. Punta San Lorenzo, or Cape Gardo, marks the northern end.
