Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is the main company that gives electricity to people in Belize, a country in Central America.
BEL runs the national electricity grid that connects most big towns in Belize with about 1,900 miles of power lines. One special place, Caye Caulker, gets its power from an off-grid station. The electricity comes from many local sources, such as hydroelectricity, biomass, petroleum, and solar energy. BEL also has a gas turbine plant to keep the power on.
In 2019, more than half of the electricity BEL made came from renewable sources. This made Belize the top renewable energy producer in the Caribbean. The Government of Belize owns a big part of BEL. The Social Security Board also owns a large share. Other owners include the company Fortis Inc. and many small shareholders.
